Migraines are defined as a recurrent throbbing headache that typically affects one side of the head and is often accompanied by nausea and disturbed vision.

There are multiple types of migraines:

  • Migraine without aura
  • Migraine with aura
  • Chronic migraine
  • Menstrual migraine
  • Hemiplegic migraine
  • Migraine with brainstem
  • Abdominal migraine
  • Clinical vomiting migraine

Each of the above present differently and each does not have one specific or direct cause. Headaches and migraines are complex and can have multiple causes. One way to get relief is to take as many steps as you can to prevent headaches and migraines.

Simple, and often forgotten, ways to prevent and relieve headaches and migraines.

  1. HYDRATE. Drink water. Soft drinks, bottled water, coffee, diet drinks, not diet drinks DO NOT COUNT. The goal is to hydrate with clean, filtered, fresh water. Roughly ½ your body weight in ounces of water. Example: If you weigh 150 lbs. Drink about 75 ounces of water each day.
  2. FIND YOUR CALM. Do whatever you need to do to find calmness. Your body is telling you that it needs a break from something. That something may be physical or emotional stress, toxins that you are breathing, drinking or eating. If it is emothional stress, you may need to breathe, rest or perform gentle movement like stretching or walking. Your body will give you clues as to whether you need to rest or move. Either way, your mind needs a break from the norm and your need to find your calm.
  3. POSTURE. Sitting, standing, or sleeping in a posture that allows easy blood flow to your head and body is paramount everyday… especially if you have a headache or are prone to headaches. Sleeping on back or side is best. Sit and stand in a way that supports the proper curves in your back and neck.
  4. MOVE. Movement, when you do not have a headache or migraine, is essential to overall health. When you move you circulate blood, burn sugar and remove stress hormones in your system. Even moving slowly throughout the day will help.

In summary, the best way to prevent and relieve migraines is to hydrate, find your calm, use good posture and move.
