Scoliosis

The natural position for our spine is to be straight up-and-down from our skull all the way to our tailbone. Our body works through reflexes and postural control to maintain this balance. Scoliosis is a term used to describe the spine curving to one side or the other. Scoliosis often develops between the ages of 10 and 15 and can be inherited. Therefore, parents with scoliosis should have their children checked at a young age.

Scoliosis can be functional or structural in nature. Functional scoliosis is one that has been developed and can be corrected with spinal adjustments, postural stretches, and exercises. Structural scoliosis will not reduce with postural maneuvers.

Spinal adjustments and therapeutic exercises are a safe and effective way to help reduce the angle of scoliosis. Also, exercising and staying active is a great way to keep the spine healthy and reduce stiffness that could be associated with scoliosis.
