Dry Needling

Total Health Chiropractic is proud to introduce a valuable new service to our offices that is going to revolutionize pain relief from chronic problems. This exciting new service is called Functional Dry Needling.

What is Dry Needling?

It is a way to treat chronic and acute pain and/or problems that may not be responding to other types of treatments. This treatment "resets" the abnormal trigger points involved with muscular pain and the associated problems. We have had great success with chronic shoulder pain, carpal tunnel symptoms, plantar fasciitis, and many other nagging problems. The sessions are quick and virtually pain free by using strategically placed acupuncture needles.

How Does Dry Needling Work?

It is important to understand what a trigger point is before understanding the treatment. A trigger point is simply a small spasm of muscle. The unique thing about a trigger point is that there are nerves that are wrapped in this spasm. Because the muscle spasm is so small, you do not know you have one unless someone presses in on it or you roll over on a trigger point while sleeping. The nerves that are wrapped up in the spasm can send pain to other areas of the body. As an example, a trigger point that is found around the shoulder blade can produce pain and numbness around the wrist i.e. Carpal Tunnel symptoms.

All muscles of the body, including trigger points, contract because a nerve tells it to do so. A nerve fires a very small electrical charge to the muscle and it moves. This is how you are able to move your arm, walk, and even smile. For various reasons, a trigger point has a nerve that is constantly firing and causing that muscle to spasm. Dry Needling allows us to "discharge" that electrical impulse by gently placing a very small needle into the trigger point itself. This allows the nerve to calm down and for the trigger point to relax. This results in a reduction of your pain, better movement in the affected muscles, and a much better enjoyment and quality of your life.

So if you or anyone you know is suffering from pain that just won't go away or if pain is keeping you from loving your life, give us a call and see how chiropractic and dry needling is the solution to your problem.
